With over 35% of over 100 billion Indian population still being at below poverty line, the cooperative initiative of Bagepalli Cooli Sangha through optimum utilization of waste & marginal land holdings appears to be a robust poverty alleviation measure that should ensure sustainable socio-economic development of backward regions like Kolar of Karnataka. The Indian NRSA (National Remote Sensing Agency) has estimated the extent of wastelands to be 63.85 Million Hectares, which is almost 20% of the total geographical are. To harness the full potential of the available land resources and prevent its further degradation, wasteland development - on a sustainable basis - is of great importance, especially to countries like India. While the M&V Plan of this project being very water-tight, it would be very easy to verify the actual emission reductions and the Carbon revenue that could accrue to the project proponents would definitely motivate others - elsewhere - to follow the above cooperative model to bring not only the vast tracts of wastelands for survival and emission mitigation. |
